Git Along, Little Dogie, combines a smooth melancholia with dreamy synths and lush orchestration reminiscent of artists like Todd Rundgren and Brian Wilson. It was made in the quiet moments of lockdown and new found Fatherhood, finding pockets of time in the middle of night, during nap times and when his partner would take the baby for a walk “I have no real memory of the recording process, it was a haze of dirty diaper fumes and bad-to-no sleep”. Like for many musicians, lock down invited the opportunity to create freely, with little to no pressure, free from what Smith describes as ‘album hell’: “it was good to make something fast and freely, it reminded me how fun making music can be”.
However, this EP is not entirely a lockdown project as many of these songs have existed for a long time; some as long as twenty years: “I wrote ‘Up On A Hill’, at university but I just could not write the lyrics to it so asked Sandro Perri to contribute, I’ve wanted to collaborate with him for years”. The downtime allowed Smith to bring matured songs into the present, massaging and manicuring them with the help of friends from Toronto’s rich, alternative DIY scene including the likes of Joseph Shabason, Sandro Perri, Daniel Lee (Lee Paradise, Phèdra), Chris Cummings (Marker Starling), Isla Craig, Thom Gill, Bram Gielen and Nathan Vanderwielen and Chris Shannon (Bart).
Leading single ‘Dawn Of The Day’ was written as part of a ‘song of the week’ club, set up in lockdown by a handful of Toronto musicians including Drew, Chris Cummings (Marker Starling) and Geordie Gordon (touring member of U.S. Girls), who found themselves coming to a complete halt without live shows, touring and studio collaborations, the song club was a way to stay active during the pandemic. Later on, the song gained brand new sonic dimensions with the help of Joseph Shabason on sax and drums, bass and percussion from Chris Shannon & Nathan Vanderwielen (Bart) who mixed the EP.
